Hey! I’m Jessie and I’m one of two Access Officers in Pembroke.
Access is all about making sure that Pembroke is welcoming to all students and that no one feels like they ‘don’t have the right background’ for Cambridge.
As Access Officers, we promote the college in two main ways: by running Access Days, in which potential applicants from our under-represented link areas spend a day in college, and through shadowing schemes, in which sixth-form students have the opportunity to come and live like a Cambridge student for a few days. My personal aims are to make the interview process a lot clearer, break down the myths surrounding Cambridge and be there to support applicants and current students with any questions or concerns that they may have.
Cambridge is an amazing place to study and we work hard to try and stop people from being put off applying (or accepting an offer) because of any stereotypes surrounding the place or the people that are here. I came through Access to Pembroke myself - neither of my parents went to university and I went to an underperforming state school with very little experience of sending people to Oxbridge so I know first-hand that things can be daunting. However, it’s true that you can fit in at Cambridge regardless of whatever background you come from.
Please don’t hesitate to get in touch about any queries that you may have, big or small, by emailing email@example.com. No question is stupid and we’d love for you to get involved!
